For more than one hundred years, the history of the iconic site on the Fitzroy Street has been developing as the beating heart of St Kilda’s cultural identity. The journey began in 1911 with the opening of the St Kilda Theatre, a grand picture palace that captivated audiences during the golden age of silent film fulling and like a Phoenix rebuilding from the ashes over the decades, the venue evolved to reflect the changing face of entertainment, famously serving as the George Cinemas in the 1990s—a beloved haven for independent film lovers that defined a generation.
In 2015, a visionary $9 million restoration transformed the historic shell into The Alex Theatre, creating a state-of-the-art “Off-Broadway” style precinct. This reinvention restored the building’s soul, providing a critical launchpad for emerging artists and a home for diverse theatre, comedy, and cabaret. Today, we fight to secure this legacy. This is not merely a building; it is a century of laughter, drama, and artistic triumph that must be preserved for the future generations of Melbourne.
